Olympic champ Simone Biles withdraws from team finals after vault

Simone Biles withdrew from the U.S. gymnastics team Olympics final after the team’s first rotation in the event.

A U.S. coach told the NBC broadcast that Biles left due to a “mental issue she is having.” According to USA Gymnastics, Biles withdrew “due to a medical issue.”

The team said she will be assessed daily before returning to the competition.

Biles, who’s been a staple for American gymnastics, left the arena with a team medical staffer before returning moments later in a sweatsuit.

The Columbus, Ohio, native did one vault before leaving the competition. When she returned, Jordan Chiles put her hand grips on for the uneven bars to replace Biles in the event. Chiles also is expected to replace Biles in the beam portion of the competition.

The team will finish the competition with three gymnasts â€" Sunisa Lee, Grace McCallum and Chiles â€" instead of four.

Official statement: “Simone Biles has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue. She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions.”
