No new local cases in Queensland as Victorian border ban takes effect

Queensland recorded just one new case of COVID-19 on Saturday, a returned traveller in hotel quarantine, after it shut its border to all of Victoria at 1am.

In an update on social media on Saturday, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said the result came from a total of 14,755 tests in the previous 24-hour period, with 39 active cases remaining in the state.

Despite declaring Victoria a hotspot on Friday, Queensland has so far held off on doing the same for the whole of New South Wales a hotspot, as health authorities were confident the greater Sydney lockdown, along with testing and sewage monitoring, were keeping ahead of the virus.

Those who have been in Victoria in the past 14 days will now only be able to enter Queensland with an exemption, along with people who have been in the Greater Sydney, Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Wollongong and Shellharbour local government areas of NSW.

Returning Queensland residents will need to undertake 14 days of mandatory hotel quarantine.

A number of new exposure sites, including at Brisbane’s international airport, were listed in the state after a new local COVID-19 infection on Friday linked to two new potential Delta strain clusters now totalling four cases â€" three in one family and likely acquired in NSW hotel quarantine.

As a result, mask wearing and restrictions still lingering from the state’s latest snap lockdown have been extended in the populated south-east corner until Friday.

The update also comes as Ms Palaszczuk prepares to depart for Tokyo on Sunday with Brisbane lord mayor Adrian Schrinner and federal Sports Minister Richard Colbeck to make the final pitch for the region’s 2032 Olympics bid.

Ms Palaszczuk has said she would not leave the state if it was staring down another lockdown.
